Blackpool Astronomy

Started as a side project by Jeff McCollough a former founding member of 1990's Seattle Shoegaze band Lapis. Blackpool Astronomy has a dark shoegaze sound with a heavy psych bent that has helped create “Tripping The Mortal Coil”. Jeff plays Guitar, Bass and keys in the band along with longtime drummer and old friend Ben Madonna creating a sonic dream state with endless delays and modulation. Tripping the mortal coil is a collection of songs inspired by the events around them including a tragic loss of Jeff’s father to cancer in the period of six months and the grief he was feeling. This has brought a much more open sound which has gotten them high marks from various radio stations, fans and music journalists. The band had been a 2 piece outfit made up Ben and Jeff in which Jeff was playing all the bass lines at the same time as the guitar, this year they added good friend and classically trained musician Mandy McGee to play Bass and sing backing vocals. Mandy already loved the music and was a good friend of Jeff’s so they figured she was a great choice. Since the decision the trio has recorded and performed together at multiple venues and will be performing the material from the album as a full band on September 18th to celebrate the release on The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records of “Tripping The Mortal Coil” with the help of good friend and label owner Renato Malizia.

The cover art of “Tripping The Mortal Coil” is an original piece by long time friend, producer and artist/photographer Alexander 23. The piece was especially created for the release by Alexander.

“Shoegaze rock continues to balloon in popularity in Seattle, as evidenced by the newish local duo Blackpool Astronomy. They fall on the more turbulent side of the shoegaze spectrum—more Swervedriver, Telescopes, and My Bloody Valentine circa “You Made Me Realise” than Slowdive or Seefeel, so you’ll probably be whipping your hair around in a vortex rather than gently nodding your head. The few songs I’ve heard by them suggest they could be an exciting proposition live, perhaps filling the void left by Jetman Jet Team’s absence.”
