# Ten Years of The John Candy (2005-2015)

The story of the band goes back to the 90s… Though it only gets shape in 2003, with the will of Vinícius Leal and Guilherme Almeida - two long term partners in a project that lost itself in the middle of 1997, end of a decade of guitars and distortions - to register some music and record them without commitment at a home studio. From this very serious fun, which took almost two years between sketches, recordings and mixing, it came out, ten years ago, the first CD I Your Ars I Was Happy, released in 2005 by the extinct Brazilian label London Burning Records. Rapidly sold out, the band´s debut was considered by the critics a "pearl from the lo-fi 90s music", since it evoked minimum recording without affection in its most raw and minimalist side.

In 2008, their second CD Overdrive Beach", composed along the three years of the first album tour, was released by Pisces Records. Even though it counts with a much nicer production, it couldn´t sound much farther from the cited "indie 90s sound", but with its sonority and writing process enriched by the new members Gustavo Cockel (bass) and Marlon Gaspar (drums). The band, however, has never believed in deliberate influences and if that second CD has pleased Lou Barlow, Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr. and Galaxie 500 fans so much, maybe that´s because those bands and their universe have been part of the band´s daily meal for so long - it definitely wouldn´t sound like Megadeth.

In 2010, Joab Regis (wonder boy from Transfusão Noise Records) joins the band renewing the drum´s throne. Two years later, the third album "Dreamscape" comes out. Released in april 2012, by Transfusão Noise Records in Brazil and by Fuego Amigo Discos in Argentina, it was considered one of the best albums of the year, by different independent press vehicles. The Dreamscape tour covered many states from the south and southeast of Brazil - including sharing the stage with international artists such as Ringo Deathstarr, Beach Fossils, Sebadoh, J. Mascis and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – ending up with three concerts in Argentina, produced by the Argentinean label that released the album and promoted it as a "mix of guitars and melodies that evoke guitarbands and the indie rock from the 90s with a certain affective memory from the indie pop sound delusions of the memorable Sarah Records bands".

In 2015, not letting its ten years of uninterrupted activity go unchallenged, The John Candy releases friday, november 13th, its fourth album, Ghostpedia, in a partnership of the labels Transfusão Noise Records and TBTCI Records. With 14 new songs, Ghostpedia is musically kind of a synthesis of the elements that characterize the previous 3 albums, distinguishing itself by the not at all lo-fi production, without superfluous ostentation; it´s also an album with dense ethereal guitars, a more pronounced "The Cure" influence that has always been kind of present,

Producing an unusual association between phantasmagoric riffs and the "semi cloudy college rock" that the band has always been referred to. Ghostpedia will be digitally released by the aforementioned labels and will also be commercialized in a ten-year-commemorative "pendrive box", which will include the band´s complete discography, some bonus-tracks and a compilation of The John Candy´s pictures and videos from the last decade.

The John Candy – Ghostpedia

Review by Renato Malizia (The Blog That Celebrates Itself)

"Ten years, ten long years have passed, and it has done more than good to The John Candy, it has made them achieve maybe their best piece of work, and it´s very hard to elect the best one of them, after all we´re talking about the band that has conceived the albums "Dreamscape" and "Overdrive Beach", not to mention the pureness of "In Your Arms I Was Happy". The point is that "Ghostpedia" gets the 3 previous albums and condense them all. The result is a record that could have been part of the "Class of 86", yes back there, besides the classics such as The Pastels, The Vaselines among others, or, if you will, Ghostpedia could´ve been side by side with maybe Bandwagonesque, who could tell, if you only concentrate in the completely addictive and seductive sound of the album. But don´t get fooled, because "Ghostpedia" is years ahead of sounding dated, check for instance, the insert of let´s say more electronic elements, that turns it into a very contemporary piece of work, that sails through different sideways without losing their very own charm. A step ahead to the future, without ever denying the past. In one word: essential."
